Jacob Graff: Colonial Clockmaker Extraordinaire

Jacob Graff lived in the small village of Lebanon on the edge of Lancaster County in colonial Pennsylvania. He grew up on the grounds of the Historic Ephrata Cloister, where his parents were members. When Jacob turned 21 he moved to the remote village of Lebanon, where he became the first clockmaker in Lancaster County. There he made some outstanding clocks that are generally considered some of the finest examples of horology in the American colonies. Though his work displays the highest qualities, Graff remains a relative unknown. G. D. Gehr is distantly related to Jacob Groff.
