He was a gifted leader and communicator but was not without controversy. Born in Eberbach, Germany in 1691, Beissel would eventually establish a religious community in Colonial Pennsylvania in 1732. Commonly referred to as the Ephrata Cloister, that community has been studied and written about for many years. But how did he get to that point? What influences in his life contributed to making Beissel who he was? These are the things that are addressed in “Conrad Beissel: The Early Years”. Focusing on the years 1720-1732, this book presents a picture of life in Colonial America among a group of religious refugees. It draws on many sources to bring together a more complete image.
