For 202 years the Sabbatarian community known as Ephrata stood as an example of religious tolerance and economic success in a multi-cultural nation. Shunning the ways of the world, Ephrata demonstrated a creative genius, both religiously and economically. Its story is a complicated one, however. They quickly learned that living a simple life is far from simple. From their architecture to their art, Ephrata was burdened with conflicting standards and opposing ideals. “Babylonian Trash” seeks to put these in perspective to gain a fuller understanding of life in this unusual community.
