“A Most Remarkable Man” tells the true story of George Showers Gehr (1921-2024). He was a country boy from Lancaster County, PA, the twelfth of fourteen children. He served in World War II as a glider infantryman in the 82nd Airborne Division of the U. S. Army. During the war, he fought in Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge, among other campaigns. After his discharge, George settled down in a small town, where he took up a career as a hairdresser. He became known as a simple, honest man with a good business sense. A devoted husband and father, and a faithful member of his church, Gehr led a quiet but rewarding life. This highly personal account includes about 60 letters which he wrote to his family during the war, revealing the emotions of a soldier longing for home. It offers a rare and valuable look into the life of a person who, at the age of 96, was referred to by his physician as “A Most Remarkable Man”.
