Description
The Ephrata Cloister was a unique religious community in 18th and 19th century Pennsylvania. Deep in the forested frontier of Colonial America, this community began in 1732 and rapidly grew to become a thriving center of activity. Through their music, writings, printing, architecture and more, this community became well known for their exemplary skills and their unusual beliefs. One of the oft-overlooked accomplishments, however, was their clock making skills. From about 1750 to 1840 Ephrata was host to seven clockmakers. Not only did they excel at making their own movements by hand, they also made many tall clock cases. The Clocks of the Cloister seeks to examine the clockmakers of Ephrata and some of their products. This second edition includes an expanded gallery, additional details, and improved indexing.
